Last Post of Semester - How to Succeed

There are several things that you can do in Angie's class that will help you succeed. First and foremost, DO NOT fall behind, especially on proposals. Keeping up with the work and getting an early start on proposals is absolutely crucial and will help keep the work load down. The work in this class isn't very hard but trying to do all of it in one week would be extremely difficult.

Meet your group mates and learn to get along with them well. I can't tell you how helpful it was that I got along with my team mates. Our schedules were absolutely hectic, but we compromised and found one hour a week we could get together and talk about the project. Again, don't fall behind on group work.

Keep up with your blogs. You may not think Angie has the time to go through and read everybody's blog, but believe me she does it, and your grade will hurt if you stop doing these things.

Overall, this was a good class and you learn a lot about how to behave and write in the real world. You also get a lot of experience in writing proposals, and for our particular class, we got a lot of Web design experience. The class is also relatively easy as long as you keep up with, and do your work. Angie doesn't like to give bad grades, and she will help you out as much as possible.

Random

This week our blog topic was up to us. Angie told us to be creative... well I'm not actually that creative a person but what I am is random. So here are some random thoughts.

I just got done writing what could be my final lab report of my college career and that pumps me up (hope I do better than I have on my million previous reports)

I graduate in May which is just like 5 months away but it feels like I'll never get there. I have a job already so all I have to do is pass my classes which could be difficult considering I have to take 20 hours in the spring, it's going to kick my tail.

I went to the gun range yesterday to shoot my buddy's .45 and even though I was wearing earplugs, I still can't here anything out of my right ear. To be completely honest I'm a little worried about it and I'll probably go to deadfurn tomorrow to get it checked out.

So I'm sittin in the library for possibly the first time in my four years here on a Sunday night and I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of people in here. I had no idea.

I'm starving and have a lot more work to do at the house and to be quite frank the girl beside me is weirding me out a little bit so I'm going to the house. See you next week.

Reflection on Employers Study Applicants' Personalities

This week we were asked to read the article on how employers determine the personalities of applicants.

After reading this article I have learned a few new things about the application process and how a lot of companies now are basing their decision on more than just a resume and a quick interview. One company said that they keep applicants there for nine or ten hours to be sure that they are being true and not just putting on a show for them. I thought that this was a very good idea because most people will not be able to tell what a person's personality is like in a quick interview.

Another approach some companies are using is trying to scare off applicants. The theory behind this is that the employers aren't trying to sugar coat anything by telling them the job is something it isn't. They will tell them straight up what the job entails and if the applicant doesn't like it then obviously they weren't right for the position. By doing this, companies are weeding out people who aren't serious about the job and keeping the ones who really want it.

Overall the article basically said that during this day in age a person applying for a job has to have a lot more than a good resume and good grades. Looking good on paper is very good for employers to see, but it is only the beginning. If the applicant doesn't have a good personality, easy to get along with, hard working, and motivated then a lot of companies don't want anything to do with them. Companies nowadays are coming up with new ways of interviewing applicants to determine just what kind of people they are and whether they will fit in with their team or not.

Dual Coding Theory

The ad I chose to write about dual coding theory about is a Bud Light commercial. In it there are two men sitting in the opera who have snuck But Light bottles into the show. During a really high note, however, his bottle shatters along with the rest of them in his jacket. The guy sitting in front of them then turns around and holds up a can asking them if it's their first time at the opera.

I found this commercial extremely entertaining. It uses dual coding theory by linking the opera with Bud Light. I know not a huge number of men like going to the opera but this commercial could be meant to symbolize pretty much anything a guy would get dragged into doing by a girl. I know it makes me want a beer just because I can relate to getting conned into something I don't want to do and thinking that a nice refreshing Bud Light would make it a lot more enjoyable, or at least bearable.

Group Work

Working with my group in this class so far has been a very good experience. We haven't really had any problems at all as far as miscommunications. If I was to name one thing that didn't go so hot it's that all of our schedules are so packed that it's very difficult to find time to actually meet as a group.

When we do meet, I am very pleased with our work. This is probably one of the most efficient groups I've ever been in in terms of how much work we get done during our meetings. There is very little fooling around; we get right to work and do what we have to do, and that's what i like best about our group. I don't think we have ever had a meeting last more than 45 minutes.

To avoid any possible miscommunications in the group we should keep doing what we are doing. We did come to an agreement on a reasonable time to meet every week so I assume we will keep that the same as well.

I think the reason we have been very successful is because we got an extrememly early start on this proposal. We've been having meetings almost since the first day we got into our group and just done a little bit at a time. Then when it came down to the last week before it was due, we really didn't do much at all besides a little revision.

I wouldn't change much as all in the second phase of the project. If I had to say something I would say that Callie doesn't need to do quite as much work. She was the only one that had any kind of web design experience before and really the only one that could work a computer better than a 9th grader, and for this reason I kind of feel like a lot of the work got put on her just because she knew more of what she was doing than anyone else.

Free Topic (due 10/28)

Since I wrote my reflection on the mock interview process last week, I get a free topic of my choice this week.

Let me go ahead and say that this assignment is extremely late (by like 5 days). I do not know what it is about this blog thing but I cannot ever remember to do them by Sunday. I don't know if it's just me or not, maybe it's because I have never had anything like this before. We will get the blog assignment for the week in class and Angie always tells us it's due by Sunday. Sometimes I will actually remember to do it but 9 times out or 10 I forget until the last 5 minutes or so. The other 1 time I won't remember until Monday.

I think the main reason for me forgeting to do these blogposts is because I am usually fairly busy on Sunday's. Ok I take that back I'm not usually that busy but I spend most of the day sitting around relaxing (trying to take my mind off school) then about 5:00 or so I will go to the library and work on homework that's due Monday. The fact that I have homework that's due that night never even crosses my mind.

For whatever reason I keep forgeting, I have got to find a way to remember because I know that it will hurt my grade in the end, and I can't let such a simple assignment bring my grade down. I think what I am going to start doing is start blogging earlier in the week when it's still on my mind, or I am just going to set an alarm on my phone that goes off the same time every Sunday telling me to write on this thing.

Mock Interview

I thought the mock interview process was a very good exercise. It gave us experience in being in the interview situation as well as allowed us to write resumes, cover letters, and follow-up letters.

Most of the stuff we did in this exercise I had done before so there wasn't a whole lot of new things that I learned. It did allow me to get better at it though. If I were to go back and do it again I would have made my cover letter in a different format and it would be longer. I would also have gone over my resume a couple more times.

Besides these two minor items I thought I did well. The interview itself went pretty smooth and I wouldn't change much at all about how I did there.

Last week we gave presentations in class on a topic of our choice.

My personal favorite was Bob's. I enjoyed this presentation for several reasons. First of all, Bob did an excellent job on catering to his audience. He obviously knew and took into account the fact that he was presenting to a class of college students because his presentation was on touring through Europe as a student. I lived in Europe for three years when I was younger and have seen most of the places he showed, but he did a good job of giving Europe through the eyes of a college aged person.

The second reason I enjoyed this presentation was because I am actually planning on going to Europe for spring break with some of my friends. I think that his presentatino has given me a good head start and a lot of good pointers for when we go.

Resume tips

The article that I found interesting was the tips on how to avoid looking like you're a job hopper.

Apparently many companies will look at a resume and, if the person has had too many jobs in a short period, will think twice about giving them a job. This makes sense because they don't want to give someone a job that's only going to be there for a short term.

The article is well written and gives several good tips on how to avoid putting yourself in this situation. Some of these tips include: defining yourself in a statement, creating coherence between hops, including involuntary hops, and writing a hybrid resume.

The point I found most interesting is writting a hybrid resume. I had never thought of this before, but it makes sense to list your skills and then name the jobs you've had that they apply to. Instead of writing all of your previous employments down this is a good way to let potential empoyers know what skills you have and not seem like you switch jobs every few months.

Interview Articles

I chose to read the article on being too talkative in a job interview. This isn't usually a problem for me because I naturally tend to listen more than talk anyways but I did think it was very interesting that 36% of recruiters said that talking too much is the biggest problem in interviewing. The article also goes on to say that when someone is overly talkative it is often a sign that they are not listening to the issues at hand, but are more concerned with telling the interviewer about all their accomplishments.

Another interesting point in that I found in this article was that recruiters want you to be rehearsed but not too rehearsed. What I get from this is that when an interviewer asks you a question, you don't want to answer it too quickly. Basically, take your time answering questions, and if you know what your answer is going to be even before they finish their question, still take a minute and at least make them think that you've thought about your answer.

My life in ten years

I quite honestly don't have a clue what I would like to be doing in ten years. It's definitely something I need to sit down and think about here pretty soon I guess.

I'm going to think "outloud" for a second and follow this train of thought to a logical conclusion.

First of all I want to graduate with a degree in animal science this coming May. My choices from there are to get a job in the animal agriculture industry. Hopefully within a few years I will be promoted to a management position where I will be able to have people work beneath me and show the company I can manage. Within ten years hopefully I will still enjoy my job and be with the same company in which case I would plan to move up through the ranks and hold the highest position possible.

My other choices are Vet School or Grad School. For Vet School I will have to wait another year because I'm already too late in applying for next fall. I'm not sure if I want to do Grad School simply because of the fact that it's more school, more money out, none in, etc... The upside to either one of these options is hopefully a better paying job upon graduation. It's definitely something to think about whether I want to be in school longer in hopes of getting a higher paying job or if I want to go ahead and get a job next year.

Either way I choose, in ten years I will be out of school and I do hope to have a family of my own, preferebly living in or around the southeast. I also plan on having a career that I love doing no matter what the salary. Whether that's management, veterinarian, or research I have yet to figure out. But I will discover it soon enough.

Web 2.0 Response

First of all I'd like to say that this video creeped me out a little bit. Maybe it's because I don't know a whole lot about computers or the internet and I'm a little ignorant, but after I was finished watching Web 2.0 I felt a little bit like I was in the matrix. Now back to the subject...

I think the title of the video, Web 2.0, is referring to the new nature of the internet. When the internet was first introduced it was very primitive and I don't think too many people understood it very well. Well now the internet has advanced so much and become accessible to everybody from children to adults which is a good and a bad thing. It's nice to have access to that kind of global information, yet on the other side of the coin, it's dangerous and scary that people can have information on you as well.

For someone coming into the workforce the biggest thing that this video shows is that they have to know at least a little bit about the internet to be successful in the new occupation. I definitely fall into this category and I think the reason that this video creeped me out was because I need to learn more about the internet.

The affect on people who are already in the workforce is similar depending on where they are in their careers. For someone who is about halfway through their career it is probably still a good idea to learn as much as they can about the internet because more than likely the company they are with will start using it more and more because it is advancing at such a rapid pace. For someone who is getting ready to retire, it may not be as important to learn about it, but it would still be a good idea because it is the way of the future whether we like it of not.

At the very end of the video it says that we are going to have to rethink everything. This is referring to the way people do basically everything but especially business. The internet has affected every part of our everyday lifes and what the video is saying is that we need to go back and think about how we do everything to make it fit around the internet.

Myself

My name is Danny Soileau and I am a senior animal science major at Clemson University. I was born in Sumter, SC and raised all over the world. Before my first birthday my parents moved to New Mexico for three years and after that, Panama City, Florida. We lived in Florida for four years and moved to Germany and then to Okinawa, Japan, and finally back to Sumter, SC. I have seen some pretty amazing things in the short time I've been around this earth and I don't take any of it for granted.
Random thoughts:
I love watching and playing just about any kind of sport, and I'm absolutely pumped for football season to be starting up again. I had an internship this past summer where I was working on a hog farm and I have to be completely honest and say that after that experience, I'm gonna be in school as long as I can. I have one brother who's a senior in high school and hopefully coming up here for school next year. I like to fish and hunt although I fish a lot more. I try to go home every now and then to fish with my dad in Sparkleberry Swamp (some of you may know where it is). A few weekends ago we went and caught 10-12 largemouth bass, a decent catfish, and what my dad likes to refer to as Moby mudfish, which pulled the boat for about 20 yards before jumping off. That's just about all I can think off at the moment but I'm sure I'll be back at some point.

note: I'm just about comuter illiterate as they come and have never had anything like a blog before so bear with me if there's some technical difficulties for a while.
